David Mammano has founded seven companies and has drawn upon these experiences to instill courage in those who view entrepreneurship as the pathway to achieving their dreams. He has won the Inc. Magazine 5000 Growth Company award three times. He is a TEDx Speaker, a professor at the University of Rochester, and an author of books on entrepreneurship and strategic planning. He graduated from the University at Buffalo and the MIT Entrepreneurial Master's Program, a program focused on entrepreneurial development. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Western NY Make-A-Wish Foundation and a local member of the Junior Achievement council.

James Hazy is a professor of management and entrepreneurship at Adelphi University in New York, USA. He has extensive experience in management, specializing in operational management, finance, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and entrepreneurship. 

In terms of his research activities, he is an editor and author of several books on topics such as Complexity Theory, Entrepreneurship, and Social Leadership. Additionally, his articles primarily focus on management metrics and practices, covering topics such as business launch, financial planning and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, training, change management, organizational development, and more.

This course will highlight how the APPRECIATION Algorithm Increases Goal Alignment, Strengthens Productive Team Norms, Builds Trust, and Accumulates Social Capital Value within a Venture Team.

Recent research has made considerable progress in understanding the dynamics of entrepreneurial human interactions in venture teams, multi-team systems, and entire organizations. Until recently, however, it has been difficult for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and consultants to use this knowledge in real-time to help create more valued individual contributors and effective collaborative teams. This is because detailed data about the specific dynamics of various interpersonal interactions and the resulting information and influence flows across an organization remain hidden from leaders and managers. Complex network theory researchers call this phenomenon: “missing information”.

APPRECIATION Algoritm is a well-defined mechanism in human interaction dynamics (HID) that, when supported by secure AI, data analytics, and information and communications technologies, enables individuals to build and evolve their own human and social capital in the context of an organization's goals and norms. It does this by enabling individual contributors to observe, gather, and use information about the efficacy of their cooperative interactions and how these might be improved. Such a system places each worker, as an individual contributor, at the center of their own personal human and social value creation process. Importantly, each individual’s personal privacy is secure and protected because each user’s data can only be accessed in detail by that precise user to support that individual’s purposeful professional development.

Richard Glaser | 06.11.2023-10.11.2023

Richard Glaser is a Senior Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in New York. For most of his career, he has been a private equity investor and manager in service, production, and high-tech companies. He has worked closely with entrepreneurs and business people, advising them on prudent wealth development. Richard was a professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, teaching entrepreneurship to graduate students. Among his roles in promoting the entrepreneurial ecosystem, he is known for his contribution to the creation and development of the entrepreneurial community (RocGrowth and RocGrowth Candids) in Rochester, for which he received the Venture Connect's Community Catalyst award. He is a co-founder and president of Digital Rochester and a board member of the New York Venture Capital Association. Currently, he is a part of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Committee of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council and the Dean's Advisory Council for the Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Students will apply the Lean Startup methodology studied in the course to shape and develop their own business concept. In this workshop, participants have the opportunity to work in teams or individually, but collaboration and the identification of complementary skills at the group level are encouraged. The following day, all teams will prepare a pitch based on the instructor's requirements, and the best performances will be selected. (2 sessions of 1 hour 30 minutes each)

Amnon Dekel | 12.12.2023-16.12.2023

Dr. Amnon Dekel is the Executive Director of ASPER-HUJI Innovate, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of the Hebrew University Jerusalem. Previously, Amnon served as the Chair of the Dept. of Software Engineering at the Shenkar College of Engineering & Design in Israel. Amnon has over 20 years of experience in product development of IT based services and applications, as well as more than 15 years of experience in Applied Research in the areas of User Experience and Mobile Computing. Amnon has participated in founding 3 companies in the area of video sharing, personal networking and indoor navigation. Amnon has received numerous international awards, including a Pulitzer nomination for his work with the New York Times. Amnon has a PhD in Computer Science from the Hebrew University. When he has time, he partakes in creating technology based art.

Workshop: Product Prototyping: Why, What and How (1)

S1. The workshop will provide students with the opportunity to learn and experiment with how to create a prototype and validate it with potential customers. The workshop will consist of 2 parts and will take place on two different days. During the first session, following a presentation on prototyping, students will be invited to present their prototype idea and how they plan to develop it. Participants will receive recommendations for improvement and solutions to enhance their execution, after which they will have one day to create a model. (2 hours)

The presentation will highlight:

  1. The evolution of the "ASPER-HUJI Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center" will be examined, emphasizing the insights gained and the manner in which the entrepreneurship center has progressed over three years, transitioning from the start-up phase to achieving recognition through valuable international awards
  2. Civil Entrepreneurship: Mr. Amnon Dekel will focus on presenting the exceptional success of Israeli civil entrepreneurship in times of crisis, demonstrating how Israelis have stepped in to solve major problems almost overnight, starting from the nightmare of October 7th.

The event aims to bring together representatives from the academic community and stakeholders from the business and social economy sectors who are interested in promoting entrepreneurship. This event will take place in CEBSS (1h)

Mark Wilson founder of Initiatives, a twenty-eight-year-old outsourced new product development company that creates and implements medical devices. Creator of the Pre-Seed Workshop—an intense company-building accelerator that was the originating spark for over 100 new hard-science-based companies over the past 20 years. Lecturer at the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business in entrepreneurship and concept-stage innovation management.

Formerly with Baxter Healthcare and Bausch & Lomb in engineering and management roles that launched new medical device and pharmaceutical platforms now exceeding $20B in cumulative sales. B.S. and M.E. Mechanical Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

One of his hobbies is caricature, and he has a remarkable talent for translating complicated problems, technologies, and ideas into annotated sketches. He is also passionate about music, and serves as the drummer for the Bent Ratchet band.

The Idea Thickening Method

A course that provides participants with a method of idea prioritization that optimizes the feasibility of a business concept. To understand the following modules, participation in this initial module is required (1h 30 min).

Customize Your Own Idea Filter

Participants will have the opportunity to create their own idea prioritization system based on the targeted business concept. During the session, participants will experiment with how to establish and calibrate evaluation criteria to select the best solutions (approximately 1-2 hours).

Using a Filter To Prioritize Action

During the module, there will be a mock pitch where participants, using a given Idea Filter, will play an active role as investors analyzing, debating, establishing future strategies, and prioritizing short-term actions regarding the presented concept (1 hour and 30 minutes).

Technology Coach Simulation

Starting from a hypothetical scenario, participants act as consultants to apply "The Idea Thickening Method" with the aim of analyzing the best technologies to commercialize. This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to experiment with the studied methodology, allowing them to test their creativity, pragmatism, and ability to perform under time pressure (approximately 2 hours).

Investment readiness: demystifying the path to investors

Based on the Art of War, the course outlines what you need to know about the different types of investors you may approach but also and mainly yourself in order to be successful in fund raising. It explains who to approach depending on your background, business idea and assets, and what the basic expectations of a typical investor shall be. Based on real examples from Technoport’s portfolio, success factors and fall traps when pitching to investors are being studied. A pitching exercise can be organised for entrepreneurs and candidate entrepreneurs following the course

The art of partnerships

Partnerships are extremely important for small businesses. They can shorten paths to market, provide credibility to a young venture, access to a new/specific industry, complement the networks and expertise available in a small team. Yet, they can also be detrimental to business growth if too demanding, rigid, unbalanced, based on divergent expectations and not aligned visions. The course will describe the things to take into consideration when considering new partners: when and why you need them and how to make the deal successful, from proposal to partnership implementation. Among other topics, the course will allow to validate partnership proposals and translate into enforceable legal terms the operational criteria most relevant to a project.

HR management: team building and scaling up

Researchers have highlighted how behavioural attributes can be effective (or not) in facilitating team progress. Belbin in particular is a research-based methodology used worldwide to help people discover, articulate and refine their strengths, to build more effective teams and improve business performance.

The teams involved will have the opportunity to learn from practical examples about profiles that best complement business models, as well as the specific challenges faced by entrepreneurs and how these can be overcome to ensure business scalability.

Access to markets and internationalisation


Based on practical examples of companies that have successfully or not scale-up at international level, this course provides tip and tricks as well as strategic advice on considering and successfully entering foreign markets, discussing how and when to consider internationalisation and highlighting the benefits, pitfalls, criteria and basic requirements for international expansion.

Intellectual property, research and licensing agreements: the basics

This course approaches the subject of intellectual property and legal agreements from a very practical point of view, highlighting the main points to be considered for an IPR policy that fully supports the company's strategic objectives, as well as the success of technical co-developments and commercial negotiations. The course focuses on the needs of spin-offs, start-ups and early-stage ideas, taking into account the flexibility required in terms of market positioning and business modeling at this stage, as well as the specific requirements of very small entities when dealing with larger organizations.

Workshop on market opportunities and business modelling

During this workshop, the target markets for the business ideas of the students and the spin-offs and start-ups in the university’s incubator will be evaluated using a methodology that allows to score and validate the risks and potential of different market scenarios. The scope is to give a thorough and practical picture of identified opportunities to be able to prioritize and make decisions regarding the allocation of (at that stage limited) resources.

Jeff Savage | 20.05.2024-23.05.2024

Jeff Savage is the Executive Director of the Faber Entrepreneurship Center at the Moore School, USA. His research focuses on identifying best practices in marketing science-based innovations, effective patenting strategies, and the development of entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems. Dr. Savage earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in strategy and entrepreneurship and received a grant from the National Science Foundation. Prior to completing his doctorate, he worked as the Vice President of Client Engagement at Marketware, a medical data aggregation SaaS firm. For ten years, Dr. Savage provided consulting to academic and scientific startups, serving as a faculty mentor in the NSF's I-Corps program. He collaborates with the Savannah River National Laboratories and serves as a faculty advisor for the Gamecock Consulting Club.

His greatest hobby is actively contributing to the launch of startups and new technologies. He enjoys a fulfilling family life with four wonderful children and spending time in nature.

ThinkTank on Innovation and Entrepreneurship will combine lectures, discussions, and experiential learning to provide participants with a practical perspective on how innovations can be leveraged. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how technology can be harnessed and applied in a startup context.

The lecture aims to highlight the specifics of technological entrepreneurship and will emphasize how innovations can be commercialized. Brooke M. Reavey | 27.05.2024-28.05.2024

Brooke M. Reavey, Ph.D., M.S., is an associate professor of marketing at the Brennan School of Business at Dominican University. She is a Fulbright researcher, having attachments in Romania, serving as a Senior Scholar in Bucharest during the period 2017 - 2018 and a Fulbright Specialist in Cluj in 2024. She holds a Ph.D. in Marketing (Business Administration) from Drexel University and a master's degree in Marketing Research from Temple University. She worked in the marketing research industry for eight years before completing her doctorate. She is a two-time winner of national innovation competitions in teaching. Dr. Reavey's academic work focuses on the intersection of digital marketing and market research, particularly regarding data democratization and privacy. Her work has been published in specialized journals such as the International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Marketing Education, and Marketing Education Review, among others. Additionally, she is the author of the textbook "Digital Marketing Foundations and Strategies 5E", published by Cengage in 2023.

Intro to Marketing for Entrepreneurs

The meeting aims to highlight the peculiarities of marketing for new businesses. Most marketing courses focus on established companies, but this course targets entrepreneurs in the ideation phase. The instructor will actively engage with the participants and encourage them to test their ideas with their target market to ensure they have the right fit

Students will have the opportunity to develop marketing plans and strategies based on their own business ideas. The instructor will collaborate with students to provide specific support on how they can test the proposed concepts as a team, and to promote marketing strategies to attract as many customers as possible.

Digital Marketing for Entrepreneurs


The meeting will provide an overview of the various aspects of digital marketing within entrepreneurship. Multiple case studies will be presented and discussed to illustrate various types of successful scenarios, depending on the business model targeted by the students.

Students will have the opportunity to develop marketing plans and strategies based on their own business concepts. Subsequently, they will present their promotion strategies and how they utilize the learned tools to be validated by the instructor and fellow workshop participants.
